About JEE Main & Advanced 2026 — Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Preparation

JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is the two-stage engineering entrance pathway in India. JEE Main is conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and serves as the qualifying gateway to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. JEE Advanced, conducted by one of the IITs on a rotational basis, is the qualifying exam for admission to all 23 IITs.

JEE Main 2026 is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) held in January and April sessions. It covers Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry with 90 total questions (75 to be attempted) — each subject has 20 MCQs (+4/−1) and 10 integer-type questions (+4, no negative marking). The best score across both sessions is used for JEE Main rank. Only the top ~2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced has two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), each 3 hours long, covering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in a more analytically demanding format. Questions include single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MCQs (with partial marking), integer-type, and paragraph/comprehension-based questions. JEE Advanced tests deeper conceptual reasoning, multi-step problem-solving, and the ability to connect concepts across topics.

LearnAtMyPlace provides free JEE Main & Advanced chapter-wise notes and topic-level practice questions for Maths, Physics, and Chemistry — structured to build strong conceptual foundations before full-length mock practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?+

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs (rotational) and is the qualifying exam for admission to all 23 IITs. Only the top ~2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced questions are significantly more conceptually demanding and test deeper analytical thinking.

What subjects are covered in JEE Main?+

JEE Main covers three subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Each subject section has 30 questions — 20 MCQs (−1 for wrong) and 10 integer-type questions (+4 for correct, no penalty for wrong). 75 questions are to be attempted from the 90 total.

What is the marking scheme for JEE Main?+

For MCQ questions: +4 for correct, −1 for incorrect, 0 for unattempted. For integer-type (numeric entry) questions: +4 for correct, 0 for incorrect (no negative marking). This makes integer-type questions a scoring opportunity — always attempt them.

What is the JEE Main eligibility criteria?+

Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are eligible. General category students need at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 for admission to IITs/NITs (65% for SC/ST). There is no age limit for JEE Main 2026.

Which chapters carry the most weight in JEE Maths?+

High-weightage JEE Main Maths topics include Coordinate Geometry (Circles, Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola), Calculus (Limits, Differentiation, Integration, Differential Equations), Algebra (Matrices, Determinants, Complex Numbers, Permutation & Combination), and Probability. Coordinate Geometry and Calculus together typically account for 35–45% of Maths questions.

How should I approach JEE Physics preparation?+

JEE Physics rewards conceptual clarity over rote memorisation. Start with Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy, Rotation, Gravitation), then cover Electricity & Magnetism (Electrostatics, Current Electricity, EMI), Optics, Modern Physics, and Waves. Solve a minimum of 30–40 topic-wise problems before attempting full-length papers. Integer-type questions in Physics often involve multiple-concept application.

What is the JEE Advanced exam pattern?+

JEE Advanced has two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), each 3 hours long, covering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Questions include single-choice MCQs, multiple-correct MCQs, integer-type, and paragraph-based questions. Marking schemes vary by question type — some have partial marking, and some carry negative marks for multiple-correct questions if you select additional wrong options.

How many times can I attempt JEE Main?+

JEE Main is held twice per year (typically January and April). Students can appear in one or both sessions — the best score across all attempts is used for ranking. Students are allowed a maximum of two consecutive years of attempts.
